Hello, DOMS…

…we meet again. I should have known you’d come around, that I couldn’t just go off and run 12 awesome miles and get off scott free. I felt SO good Sunday, save for some pain in my glutes, especially on my right side, and the usual quad stiffness. Monday was my rest day. I did a little walking with Charlie and went grocery shopping, but otherwise did literally nothing but rest. Yesterday, DOMS were still present.

I went to BodyPump in the morning, where for once I was called out for something other than improper form. I was there in my own little world waiting for class to start when the instructor goes “I LOVE YOUR TIGHTS! YOU! WITH THE PINK! LOVE YOUR TIGHTS!” and I felt like a giddy kid, like OMG the teacher likes me! She likes me! This instructor was a hoot and a half, I’ve never had the pleasure of a Pump class with her until yesterday. She’s super high energy, and really attentive to everyone in the class, making sure everyone has proper form, all the while lifting crazy weight and being awesome. I’m thinking Tuesday morning Pump could be a regular thing when possible. Anyways, I lifted a bit heavier than usual on squats, and gave it my all on lunges. My legs were on fire, and my right ass cheek was screaming.

Afterwards, I carved out an hour of time for cardio. I had planned a crazy HIIT interval workout with hills AND sprints on the treadmill, but when I hopped on, my glute was just not having it and I could feel my hip/groin pinch. Elliptical it was. They got these new ones at the mall gym, it’s like a stairmaster, elliptical and simulated running machine all in one. So I did HIITS on that with crazy resistance - the hill portion of my workout. Then I decided to try my hand at the treadmill once again, did some sprints there, holding it longer and longer. I basically slaughtered my legs yesterday. Awesome workout, yes, but no bueno for the ol’ legs.

I had planned a 7 mile easy run today, then pulled my calf muscle in bed this morning. Pair that with sore glutes and DOMS all around my legs and I realized it’d be best to give the legs a rest. Upper body day it is! I hopped on the bike and spun as fast as I could for 3 miles/11 minutes, then did an abs circuit, then arms/chest/back. It felt really good to use the free weights and do my own workout again, to really get in the zone, you know? I missed that. With TRX and group exercise and running taking over, I haven’t actually sat down to put together a workout and then go kick ass. This one was a mash up of Tone it Up workouts and then throwing in some extra moves/sets/sequences. It was great.

Tomorrow, I’m up bright and early for that 7 miler! I’m trying to get in the habit of running before 7am, so that when the time comes to run the Detroit Free Press, I’ll be accustomed to running so early and in the dark. I can’t believe it’s less than a month away! I received an email saying they were assigning bib numbers, and to book hotels now. I’m so excited! Nervous and kind of scared, but excited!
I’ve been going to a couple of Tiger’s games in Detroit recently, and each time we go through the tunnel I keep thinking “holy crap I’m going to be running through here”. It’s nuts. The inclines worry me. I just want to finish and not have any issues on race day. And a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks - my first and only of the season. Starbucks is delicious but their drinks are death, however I decided that after running my first half marathon I think I could spare the calories and sugar guilt and reward myself!

That’s all for now. Hope you’re all enjoying Hump Day and, as always, happy running! :)
